Lot 236 | CHAGALL, Marc (1887-1985), artist — HOMER
Estimate value
£ 40 000 – 60 000
L’Odyssée. Paris: Fernand Mourlot, 1974.
A modernist take on a classical tale, this two-volume livre d’artiste depicts in vivid colours the trials of Odysseus in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Chagall’s rendering of the Ancient Greek world draws on his own trips to the Mediterranean, where he was inspired by the region’s magnificent landscape and culture. The vastness of Homer’s epic poem demanded extensive illustrations, which led Fernand Mourlot to publish L’Odyssée in two volumes, both of which are here presented in their original portfolio boxes. Mourlot 749-830; Cramer books 96; Ulrike 767.
Two volumes, folio (each 427 x 321mm). Number 173 of 270 copies, printed on Arches wove paper, signed by the artist, with 82 lithographs, of which 43 are printed in colour. Both loose as issued, contained in a grey cloth cover box lettered in gilt on spine and front cover; sold in the original cardboard box. Provenance: labelled number 173 on original cardboard box by publisher.
