Tériade, jeune éditeur d'origine grecque ayant travaillé avec Skira, propose dès 1939, à Chagall d'illustrer le célèbre roman de Longus, Daphins & Chloé. L'artiste refuse, ne voulant pas concurrencer l'édition que Vollard publie en 1902 avec les gravures de Bonnard. Suite à la mort de ce dernier en 1952, Chagall accepte finalement le projet. Il se rend à plusieurs reprises en Grèce entre 1952 et 1954 pour s'imprégner des lieux, découvrir les paysages et effectuer le travail préparatoire.
Chagall met quatre ans à produire les 42 lithographies pour l'ouvrage. Chaque illustration nécessite jusqu’à 25 couleurs, chacune exigeant un passage distinct. Daphnis & Chloé est généralement et justement vu comme son chef-d'oeuvre gravé.
Exemplaire Kettaneh, d'une grande fraicheur, dans une magnifique reliure mosaïquée signée Paul Bonet.
Le relieur, fin connaisseur, a pris soin de relier les deux volumes en montant les lithographies sur onglet afin de préserver les dimensions et d'éviter tout rognage qui toucherait l'illustration.

2 volumes in-folio (418 x 340 mm). Tirage à 270 exemplaires sur vélin d'Arches, celui-ci n° 70. Entièrement monté sur onglets. Illustré de 42 lithographies originales en couleurs incluant le frontispice et 16 sur double page. (Quelques reports aux pages de texte). Reliure signée Paul Bonet, datée 1964 : "maroquin bleu ciel, une silhouette verticale mosaïquée de box dans des nuances pastélisées se détachant sur le fond de maroquin, lui-même mosaïqué de formes nuageuses de maroquin de couleurs vives (gamme Chagall)", doublures de daim souris, second tome à très légères variantes, tranches dorées sur témoins, couvertures et dos conservés, chemises et étuis assortis (dos très légèrement passés, dos des chemises passés et étuis frottés).

The results of the auction are published within a few days after the end of the auction. In the top menu of the site, find the tab "Auctions". Click on it and you will be on the auction catalog page, where you can easily find the category "Results". After opening it, select the desired auction from the list, enter and view the current status of the interested lot.
The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. In the near future you will find detailed information for each case in the section "Auction information" on the page of the auction catalog and the lot.
Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
