Further details

CHARLES-FRANÇOIS GRENIER DE LACROIX CALLED LACROIX DE MARSEILLE (1700 OR 1720-1779/1782), FISHERMEN AT THE EDGE OF A ROCKY BASIN, A WATERFALL AND A CASTLE IN THE BACKGROUND, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED, LOCATED AND DATED (LOWER RIGHT, ON THE ROCK)

The marine paintings of Charles-François Grenier de Lacroix (1700 or 1720-1779/1782), known due to his birthplace as Lacroix de Marseille, enjoyed great popularity with eighteenth century European patrons. His art was very close to that of his teacher, Claude Joseph Vernet (1714-1798), the ‘Painter of the King's Navy’. Lacroix had probably met Vernet in Marseille, before following him to Rome. Although his works were in great demand during his lifetime, few concrete facts about his life are known; neither his exact date of birth, nor the precise year of his departure for Italy. What we do know is that his stay in Rome was longer than Vernet's and that he died in Germany after 1779, following his return to France in 1776.

Lacroix de Marseille was a great admirer of Vernet's work, and it is not uncommon to find motifs by one artist in the other's compositions. The composition with its majestic waterfall evokes Vernet's depications of the cascatellas at Tivoli, particularly in his large composition from the 1730s in the Musée du Louvre (Paris, inv. 8332). Equally, the figures dancing in the centre of the grotto (see the following lot) are reminiscent of Vernet's La gondole italienne in the Hermitage (see F. Ingersoll Smouse, Joseph Vernet, Peintre de Marine, 1714-1789, Paris, 1926, no. 455).
