Date: Ca. 1870.
Technique: Ebony, amaranth, satin wood amongst other fruitwoods furnished. Fire gilded bronze.
Description: Elongated, rectangular shape with rounded sides. Fine marquetry with musical motifs on the
top. The wide frame with one drawer. The top hinged and underneath not only the drawer,
but also two covered side compartments and two small square shelves. Large oval mirror
fitted into the lid. The four conical legs are fluted and have a connecting cross crowned
with vases.
Measurement: 72,5x68x40cm.
Mark: On the lock signed "Diehl A Paris 19 r. Michel le Comte".

Private collection Rhineland-Palatinate.

Diehl, who came from Steinbach, settled in Paris in 1840. He set up a large studio at 39 Rue Saint-Sébastien, where he employed no fewer than six hundred craftsmen around 1870. Diehl took part in all the major international exhibitions in the mid-19th century, starting with the Universal Exhibition of 1851. Various works by Diehl can be found in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy, Nancy and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
