Lot 56 | CHICO STONE METEORITE
Estimate value
£ 700 – 1 000
Chico is a rare impact-melt breccia, having suffered an energetic collision on its parent asteroid. Portions of the rock were completely melted; unmelted portions survive as shocked clasts flanked by impact melt.
Many small stones were found on a ranch in New Mexico in 1954. All were sold to the University of New Mexico, making them rare in private hands.
Christie's would like to thank Dr. Alan E. Rubin at the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles for his assistance in preparing this catalogue.
