Estimate value

An important map of China and Southeast Asia, first published in Linschoten's Itinerario of 1596 (although the map is dated 1595, the privilege being granted in 1594). Linschoten's map was made, as he states in the Itinerario, from the most correct charts that the Portuguese pilots nowadays make use of. This map extends from Burma to New Guinea, and “Beach” (Australia) to Japan. Most of Japan and Southeast Asia is based on Fernao Vaz Dourado, China on Baruda, and the Philippines on Bartolomen Lasso's charts. Linschoten lived in Spain as a merchant from 1579 and from 1583-89 was secretary to the Portuguese Archbishop in Goa. His work reflects his knowledge of secret sailing guides and charts used by the Portuguese. Suárez, Early Mapping of the Pacific Ocean fig. 74.
Engraved map, hand-colored in outline, the cartouche borders, compass rose, sea creatures, and ships are hand-colored, 388 x 525mm on 410 x 537mm sheet (centerfold with some very pale dampstain and a reinforcement on verso repairing a tiny hole near bottom).
