Danish painter who was a contemporary of Kierkegaard and Andersen, Christopher Eckersberg was first and foremost influenced by David, with whom he trained in Paris. As major representative of neoclassicism in Scandinavia, he played a major role in the Golden Age of Danish painting. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1817, he also taught at the Copenhagen Academy, where he promoted the study of nudes from life. His reform of the institution led to the introduction of drawing from the female model from 1833 onwards, and it is probably in this context that this drawing must be understood. It bears many similarities to the preparatory study for Nude Woman Putting on Her Slippers, now in private hands (A. Johansen, E. Salling, M. Saabye, Den nøgne guldalder: Modelbilleder, C.W. Eckersberg og hans elever, Copenhagen, Den Hirschsprungske Samling, 1994, p.131, n° 60), including the same cross-hatching and the typical hairstyle. The monogram ‘E’ for Eckersberg also appears on other drawings (see, for example, Copenhagen, Nasjonalmuseet, inv. NG.K&H.A.03312).
