CHRYSOSTOMUS, Johannes (c. 40 – c. 115)
In omnes Pauli apostoli epistolas interpretatio, in Greek (volumes 2-4). Edited by Bernardino Donati. Verona: Stefano Nicolini da Sabbio and Brother, 1529
A large, fresh copy of the editio princeps of Chrysostomus’ commentaries on St Paul, in contemporary vellum. It was commissioned by Gian Matteo Giberti, Bishop of Verona and secretary to Pope Clement VII, and printed by the Sabio brothers who were the main suppliers of liturgical texts to the Greek community in Venice. It is likely that the brothers had a new Greek type cut for this project. 'By much and by far the finest Greek work which I ever saw from the Sabii press' (Dibdin). Adams C-1539; EDIT 16 CNCE 32946.

3 (of 4) parts in 4 volumes, folio (340 x 245mm). Greek and Roman types, with the 4 blanks in parts 2-4, woodcut decorative headpiece, initial and incipit opening each part printed in red (lacking part 1, occasional marginal dampstaining, tear into text without loss part 2, p.202). Contemporary unlined vellum, yapp edges, lettered on spines and upper covers in Greek, old shelf mark on spines, text blocks reinforced with medieval manuscript fragments (yapp edges lightly defective, spine head of first volume repaired). Provenance: Livio Ambrogio (monogram bookplate).
