Attractive and rare set of the first Elzevir edition of the works of Cicero, "très jolie et fort recherchée" (Willems). The text is taken from Jan Gruter (1560-1627). Cicero was the Roman gentleman-intellectual par excellence, and his work encompasses everything from acrobatic oratory and political theory to philosophical musings and intimate letters to his friends. Willems 535.

Ten volumes in eight, 12mo (130 x 75mm). Engraved title page in first vol, other title pages with woodcut device; engraved portrait of Cicero. Contemporary yapped vellum, titles in ink on spines.
