First French edition, translated from the Spanish "Imperio de la China" (Madrid: Juan Sanchez, 1642), which was published from the Portuguese "Relacao da propagacao", printed for the first time in Madrid in 1641 from a Portuguese manuscript dated 1638. The work is divided into parts: the first is a general description of Chinese society; the second deals with foreign missions; the third is about the campaigns in Manchu. The work is important as it is a precise and objective account, not yet influenced by subsequent racist or colonial mythologies.

4to (229 x 170mm). Title in red and black with engraved vignette, initials and woodcut headpieces (some browning and spotting). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt borders on covers, gilt title on spine (some wear and chips). Provenance: Antonii Turanbont? (ownership inscription on title) - Esparron (label).
