First edition of Coryate's European adventures. "There probably has never been another such combination of learning and unconscious buffoonery as is here set forth" (Pforzheimer). Coryate was one of the most widely traveled Englishmen of his his time, covering large swaths of Europe on foot. Known for his curiosity and wanderlust, he is credited as the first English writer to use the term "umbrella." The contents here are bound in different order than called for in Pforzheimer. Quarto (206 x 140mm). Engraved title (shaved); four engraved plates, two folding (repairs at margins, trimmed at or close to plate marks). Modern red morocco gilt, all edges gilt (some gatherings a little browned, top edge shaved occasionally affecting the rule, errata leaf repaired); custom box. Provenance: Dr Thomas Fullar (autograph document bound in).
