Lot 150 | [CURTIS, William (1746-1799)]
[CURTIS, William (1746-1799)]

Instructions for collecting and preserving insects: particularly moths and butterflies. London: George Pearch, 1771. [Bound after:] The complete fisherman: or universal angler containing full directions for taking all kinds of river fish. London: Fielding and Walker, 1778.

Two scarce essays on fishing and insect collecting from the second half of the eighteenth century. The engraved frontispiece of The fisherman is by the engraver Robert Pollard (1755-1838) and is dated 1 April 1778. The book contains a guide to fly fishing, including the making of artificial flies, and a compendium of the ‘principal sea-fish, their nature … and the method of catching them’. The Instructions were published anonymously by Curtis and contain a plate by the engraver Ignace Fougeron (fl.1750-1782). Although ‘small … the book is nevertheless an important pamphlet connected with entomology’ (Lisney p.205).

2 works in one, octavo (179 x 105mm). First work with engraved frontispiece; second work with folding engraved plate (occasional minor staining). Modern calf. Provenance: John Dickin (of Water Upton; ink ownership inscription) – T.J. Dillon (bookplate).
