DANIELL, William (1767-1837) and Richard AYTON (1786-1823)

A Voyage Round Great Britain. London: T. Davison for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown and William Daniell, 1814 [-1825].

‘The most important colour plate book on British topography’ (Tooley): first edition, finely illustrated, this being from the special issue with the plates printed on card. Tooley suggests that as few as 25 of these special sets may have been issued. Pasted into the final volume is a letter signed by Daniell to an unnamed recipient, presenting this final part of the publication and sending his thanks for the ‘kind and constant support’ he has received. Abbey Scenery 16; Tooley 177.

Eight volumes, quarto (351 x 253mm). 308 hand-coloured aquatint plates with grey wash borders, by and after Daniell, on card and mounted on guards; with, pasted onto the front endpaper of vol. III: letter signed (‘W. Daniell’) to unknown recipient (‘Dear Sir’), 14 Russell Place, Fitzroy Square, 9 July 1825. One page, 185 x 114mm (lacking the engraved dedication and uncoloured ‘Kemaes Head’ plate in vol. I, occasional spotting and staining). Contemporary diced half Russia over marbled boards (rebacked to in morocco, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: some contemporary marginal annotations in pencil – John Stansfeld (19th-century bookplate) – Joyce Cary (book label).
