Estimate value
10000GBP £ 10 000 – 15 000
A Voyage round Great Britain undertaken in the summer of the year 1813, and commencing from the Land’s End, Cornwall. London: for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown and William Daniell, 1814-1825.
‘The most important colour plate book on British topography’ (Tooley): first edition, special issue with the plates printed on card. Tooley claims that only 25 of these special sets were issued with the plates on card and calls it ‘a magnificent series of plates, almost all of equal quality’. The work documents a clockwise journey around the entire coast of Great Britain, starting at Land’s End in Cornwall; its beautiful views played a key role in shaping the British public’s appreciation of coastal scenery, moving attention from inland picturesque landscapes to the dramatic and varied seascapes of the island. Abbey, Scenery 16; Bobins 636; Tooley 177.
8 volumes, quarto (360 x 255mm). Aquatint dedication and 308 hand-coloured aquatint views printed on card with grey wash borders by and after William Daniell, mounted on guards (without the index map [issued separately], and the uncoloured plate Kemaes Head, 2 leaves of text in volume 1, pp.123-6, on thicker paper and possibly supplied from another copy). 20th-century crimson crushed half morocco by Sawyer, red cloth boards, spines in six compartments with raised bands gilt, top edge gilt, housed in matching cloth slipcases, lettered in gilt on spines. Provenance: George Seton Veitch (armorial bookplate in each volume)—Christie’s London, 20 May 1992, lot 45.
