EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). "Demostracion de la no existencia de campos gravitacionales sin singularidades de masa total no nula" [pp. 5 - 9]. In: Revista de Universidad Nactional de Tucamàn. A. 2:1-2, Tucamàn, December 1941. [With:] Typed letter signed ("A. Einstein") to Godofredo Garcia, Princeton, 17 February 1944.

Albert Einstein inscribes a copy of an offprint of his article on gravitation to Peruvian mathematician, Godofredo García. In 1941, Guido Fubini invited Einstein to contribute a paper to Revista de Universidad Nactional de Tucamàn, recently founded by the Italian mathematician Alessandro Terracini. Einstein agreed and submitted "an article in which a novel demonstration of the non-existence of regular static spherically symmetric solution in the general relativity was given." (Galvango and Giribet, "The Particle Problem in Classical Gravity A Historical Note on 1941," European Journal of Physics, 2005, 1). Einstein inscribed the present copy to Godofredo García (1888-1970), a Peruvian mathematician and engineer who published widely in those fields as well as astronomy, astrophysics and engineering. In his subsequent letter to García, Einstein thanks him for his earlier letter, "which reminded me of the interesting and pleasant conversation I had the honor to have with you on your visit to Princeton." Einstein then offers his "heartfelt thanks" to the "Academia National for the great honor you have bestowed upon me by electing me as a member." It was probably during García's visit to Princeton that Einstein presented this offprint—the same year that the Peruvian had been elected a member of the American Philosophical Society. (Einstein had been a member since 1930.)

Quarto (266 x 179mm) inscribed and signed at top left of title: "To Dr. G. Garcia with kind greetings A. Einstein 1943" (moderate foxing). Letter of enclosure: one page, 279 x 216mm on Institute for Advanced Study letterhead (light foxing). Provenance: Godofredo Garcia – by descent to the consignor.
