Further details

A BLUE AND GREEN PATINATED BRONZE DEPICTING HERO MOURNING LEANDER, DENYS PUECH (1854–1942), 1918

Dated 1918, this work exemplifies Denys Puech’s engagement with antique melancholy, rooted in a classical tradition informed by the texts of Ovid and Musée le Grammairien, and previously explored by sculptors such as Diébolt, Etex, Bourgeois, and Chapu. Here, Puech depicts Hero, priestess of Aphrodite, mourning the death of her lover Leander, who drowned while crossing the Hellespont to reach her.

Puech addressed this theme continuously from 1915 to 1929 across multiple media, including plaster, bronze, marble, and terracotta. Hero’s kneeling posture reflects a recurrent sculptural exploration in Puech’s work, previously seen in La Muse d’André Chénier (1887) and Aurore (1900), where the female figure, curled inward, conveys contemplation, inspiration, or grief.
