Inspired by David Hamons, Mickalene Thomas and Adrian Piper, Derrick Adams is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice explores the way in which individual ideas and aspirations combine and attach themselves to colours, objects and symbols. His colourful, fragmented style of form, deeply inspired by Cubism, is developed from the close observation of his immediate surroundings, while drawing on popular culture and memories. Head #11 is part of the Deconstruction Head series, described by the artist as follows:“We decipher constructed objects by how they appear on the surface, but through deconstruction we can investigate what lies beneath the surface and test for relevance and purpose.''
Here, this process of deconstruction is made visible through the fragmentation inherent in the medium of collage, where the multiple materials echo this process of self-image construction. Many works from this series have now been incorporated into the permanent collections of international museums: Head #4 is in the Studio Museum in Harlem and Head #2 is in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
