Das Brustbildnis Adolph von Menzels im Dreiviertelprofil mit Zwicker gibt realistisch die ganze Persönlichkeit und den Charakter des Künstlers wieder, der seinen Zeitgenossen mit seiner im Alter zunehmend schroffen Art oft allzu mürrisch und voller Ingrimm begegnete. Der Stil des vorliegenden Bildnisses entspricht hierbei ganz Menzel selbst, der mit seinem kritisch beobachtenden Blick als Maler, Zeichner und Illustrator in der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jhs. zum bedeutendsten deutschen Künstler des Realismus wurde. Öl/Lwd., alt auf Karton kaschiert. Verso Stempel "Nachlaßauktion (/) ADOLF KAUFFMANN (/) Wien, Dorotheum". 51 cm x 40 cm. Rahmen.
In der Auktion des Dorotheums in Wien, 24.-26.1.1918, in der die künstlerischen Nachlässe von Hans Wilt, Adolf Kaufmann, Hans Dvorak und Carl Karger versteigert wurden, findet sich das vorliegende Porträt nicht.
