Lot 52 | DEUTSCHES TAFELKLAVIER VON JOHANN MATTHIAS SCHIFFMANN, DUSEMOND (BRAUNEBERG), UM 1780-1790
Estimate value
€ 1 800 – 3 600
GERMAN SQUAREPIANO BY JOHANN MATTHIAS SCHIFFMANN, DUSEMOND (BRAUNEBERG), CIRCA 1780-1790
The squarepiano by Johann Matthias Schiffmann was built between 1780 and 1790 in Dusemond, today's Brauneberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The instrument is made of walnut and rests on a separate frame with curved legs and two drawers. Four hand stops (two on each side of the keyboard and two on the left inside the instrument) operate a divided damper lift (FF-h0 and c1-f3), the lute-stop and the harp-stop, which operates next to the hitchpinblock.
The squarepiano has a German “Prellmechanik” without escapement and without checks. The single tone dampers underneath the strings (under-dampers with wooden damper levers) are each mounted in their own wooden capsule.
The keyboard (FF-f3) has a 3-octave-span of 47.9cm. The hammers are covered with leather.
Dimensions of the instrument:
Length: 1589mm
Width: 525mm
Total height: 784mm
Body height: 183mm
A special feature is a silent string at the bass end of the bridge, which is currently not attached. The design is intended to produce a richer sound in the bass.
The instrument has been restored in the past, is conditionally playable, but has a larger crack in the treble of the soundboard, near the hitchpinblock. A possibly original key to the instrument is still present.
The present instrument was almost certainly on display at the Great Exhibition 1925 in Cologne.
