each plain circular, engraved with a coat-of-arms beneath a coronet and above a motto, fully marked, each engraved underneath with scratch weight: 18:2 (4), 18:5 (3), 18:6 (5), 18:7 (2), 18:8 (4)
The coat of arms belongs to the Hope family, for Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681–1742). Charles Hope became the Earl of Hopetoun at the age of 22, on April 15, 1703.

Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun, became earl at the age of 22. According to tradition, his elevation to the peerage at such a young age was due to the fact that his father, John Hope, while accompanying the Duke of York (later James II) aboard the Royal Gloucester, which sank, gave up his place in the lifeboat to the Duke and consequently drowned.
The 1st Earl was a strong supporter of the Union between England and Scotland in 1707, but he is best known today as the builder of Hopetoun House in Linlithgow, primarily based on the designs of the architect Sir William, 1st Marquess of Annandale. He passed away in 1742.
Other pieces from the Hopetoun service have been sold at auction since 1953, including a dish and a pair of matching small dishes (12 1/2 inches in diameter) by Thomas Parr, also dated 1707, sold at Sotheby’s, London, on June 8, 1972, lot 71. Additionally, twelve soup plates from 1706, marked by Philip Rollos I, were sold at Christie’s in the Rothschild Masterpieces collection, New York, on October 11, 2023, lot 30, and six more by the same silversmith were sold in the Patino collection at Christie’s, New York, on October 20, 1986, lot 39. Twelve plates from the same 1707 service, bearing the hallmark of Thomas Parr, were sold at Christie’s, London, on July 12, 1983, lot 172.
