A PAIR OF LOUIS XIV SILVER CANDLESTICKS "À LA FINANCIÈRE"
MARK OF ANTOINE TURPIN, PARIS, 1690
each on square stepped base, the fluted square sectioned stem resting on stepped calyx, marked underneath and foot-rim
These candlesticks can be compared to the pair dated 1683-1684 from the former collection of David David-Weill (1936), illustrated in H. Nocq, 1926-1931, Volume IV, p. 72 and in M. Bimbenet-Privat, Les Orfèvres et L’orfèvrerie de Paris au XVIIe siècle, Paris, 2002, pp. 110-111, No. 31. Another pair by this silversmith, dated 1687-1691, was sold in the Cassel van Doorn collection at the Ader auction, Galerie Charpentier, on May 30, 1956, lot 65.
This model of candlestick, popular from 1660 until the late 17th century, always features a fluted stem and a characteristic collar. The term "à la financière" to describe a candlestick first appeared in 1655 in an inventory of Cardinal Mazarin, under numbers 620 and 687, referring to "a small square candlestick à la financière."
