First edition, in a very fine Doves binding from 1904. "The only book, properly to be called a book, that I have ever yet written myself, the one that will stand, (if anything stand), surest and longest of all work of mine" (Ruskin, Sesame and Lilies, 1865, quoted in Wise). Wise Ruskin 97.
Octavo (168 x 108mm). Half-title present. Full crushed red levant morocco by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery. Covers with repeated gilt rose briar tools on a closely gilt-dotted ground, a central lozenge left blank except for the title on the upper cover and the author and date on the lower cover; spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, gilt-lettered in one, leaf tools and dots in the rest; board edges and turn-ins gilt; paper edges gilt and gauffered; stamp-signed on the lower turn in: "The Doves Bindery 19 CS 04". Modern chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Christie's New York, 20 November 1981, lot 626.
