"Mittagsschläfchen". Originaltitel
1902 hat der deutscher Feuilleton-Redakteur, Schriftsteller, Humorist und Lyriker Fritz von Ostini das vorliegende Gemälde für seine Grützner-Monographie in dichterischer Sprache höchst anschaulich beschrieben: "Welch ein Bild friedevollen Behagens ist der alte Pfarrer (...), der vor den Resten seiner Mahlzeit im Lehnstuhl eingeschlummert, Siesta hält! Was für angenehme Träume müssen ihn umgaukeln, daß er so lieblich lächelt! Die Hände hält er über dem Magen gefaltet und die Stellung der Finger zeigt, daß ihn der Schlaf überraschte, während er eben mit der beschaulichen 'Daumenmühle' beschäftigt war. Das gutmütige behäbige Gesicht des alten Herrn ist geradezu klassisch im Ausdruck eines Superlativs von Behagen, von anständigem, wohltemperiertem Behagen, das (...) von sanftem Gewissen und jener idealen Verdauung herrührt, die schon Narciß als das höchste Glück der Erde rühmt (...) mit seiner Lebenskenntnis ist hier der Typus des Weltpriesters gekennzeichnet (...)". Grützner gehört neben Carl Spitzweg und Franz von Defregger zu den bedeutendsten und bis heute populärsten Genremalern der Münchener Schule in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jhs.; Ein Hauptsujet waren anekdotische, heitere, erzählerische Szenen aus dem Klosterleben mit Mönchen, die sich sinnenfroh und ausgiebig irdischen Genüssen hingeben. Das vorliegende, in typischer fein lasierender Malweise ausgeführte Werk, gehört zu den wenigen Darstellungen des weltlichen Klerus im Oeuvre Grützners. Es beeindruckt durch die meisterhaft wiedergegebene Physiognomie und sympathische Charakterisierung des zufrieden schlummernden Pfarrers, in dessen Mund noch ein zum Mahl genossener Zigarillo steckt.
