EDWARDES [or EDGUARD], David (c.1502-c.1542)
De indiciis et praecognitionibus. [London: Robert Redman, 1532].
First edition of the first part of an extremely rare English medical publication: only two other copies are known (British Library and St John’s College, Oxford). Edwardes was educated at Oxford and Cambridge and became a medical practitioner at both Cambridge and Bristol. Original published as two distinct works in one, the present copy contains the first part only, ‘De indiciis et praecognitionibus’, which is a continuation of medieval tradition dealing with uroscopy and medical prognostication. The second, ‘in Anatomicen introductio luculenta et brevis’, is recognised as ‘the first work published in England which was devoted solely to anatomy’ (O’Malley and Russell). ESTC S110609.

Small octavo (160 x 103mm). Title within woodcut border with initials ‘I M’ [McKerrow and Ferguson no.15], woodcut initials and tailpieces (without blank I4, some spots, title faintly soiled, lacking the second part ‘In anatomicen introductio luculenta et brevius’). Early 20th-century maroon morocco, gilt stamp of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society on upper cover (faintly rubbed). Provenance: early ink inscription on title relating to the life of the dedicatee Henry FitzRoy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset – Royal Society of Medicine (binding stamp [Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society]).
