Lot 155 | EDWARDS, George (1694-1773)
Estimate value
£ 7 000 – 10 000
A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and of some other Rare and Undescribed Animals. London: for the Author, 1745-1803. [With:] – Gleanings of Natural History ... Glanures d'histoire naturelle. London: for the Author, 1760-1806.
Mixed edition with English and French text of this important English ornithological work containing detailed descriptions of birds, many of which had not previously been illustrated. The majority of them were foreign species, usually drawn from live specimens in captivity in London. Linnaeus gave about 350 birds their scientific names based on Edwards' descriptions. The Gleanings was issued as a sequel to the main work. ‘One of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and a work of Ornithology’ (Fine Bird Books). The bibliography of the work is extremely complicated: ‘In common with many other publications of the same period many copies of this work were made up from assorted stock, giving rise to considerable difficulty in the identification and collation of ideal copies of the various editions and issues’ (Lisney). Part I of Uncommon Birds contains two letterpress titles of unidentified issue, but must be after the final English issue of part II of Gleanings which was issued in 1764; the letterpress title and dedication of part II of Uncommon Birds are also of unidentified issue. Because of the uncertainty of the collation, this lot is sold not subject to return. Anker 124, 126; Nissen IVB 286, 288; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.73; Lisney, 191, 192, 196, 197, 198, 200, 202, 203, 205, 206, 208, 210 and 211; Zimmer pp.192-94 and 198-99.
