Lot 249 | Edwin Scharff (Neu-Ulm 1887 - Hamburg 1955). Pandora.
1952. Bronze, black patinated. H. 69,5 cm (including cast plinth). Monogr. ES and dated 1952. A female nude standing on a square plinth with her head held high and her hands clasped behind her back. Scharff shows the well-known figure from Greek mythology in full female nudity as a seductive "femme fatale" similar to the image of the seductive "Eve" before the fall of man. - The larger-than-life model (h. 240 cm) of Pandora was created in 1951 and two examples were cast by Schmäke in Düsseldorf in 1952/53 (today in the courtyard of the Edwin Scharff Museum in Neu-Ulm and the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp). The smaller version was considered unknown until 2011, when another cast first appeared on the auction market. Since then, only a few more examples of the smaller version have come onto the art market - German sculptor, draughtsman and graphic artist. S. studied 1903-07 at the Munich academy. In 1913 he was co-founder of the Neue Secession Munich. In 1923 he became professor in Berlin, later in Düsseldorf, but was sacked by the Nazis in 1937. In 1946 he became professor in Hamburg. Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal.), Cologne (Wallraf-Richartz-Mus.), Hamburg (Kunsthalle), Munich, Mannheim, Neu-Ulm (E.-S.-Museum) a. others.
