Lot 9202 | Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este – Meissen-Service "Roter Hofdrache" als Geschenk des sächsischen Königshauses, um 1900
Estimate value
€ 5 000
U. Pietsch, A. Loesch, E. Ströber, Die Porzellansammlung zu Dresden - China, Japan, Meißen, München, 2006, S. 95.
White, glazed porcelain with iron red décor, partially gilt, the underglaze blue crossed swords mark and the red cipher of Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, stamped in the base of each piece. The repeating pattern composed of two birds circling each other and the elongated Chinese court dragon.
By all accounts, this service was presented to Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive, on his engagement (he was assassinated in 1914) and is composed of four large cups with five saucers, four small cups with three saucers, a water jug (height 20 cm, the lid rose chipped), a coffee pot (height 20.5 cm, lid is missing), a milk jug (height 11 cm), four dessert plates (diameter 23.5 cm, one edge chipped) with an intricate openwork border and one serving platter (diameter 26.5 cm). Incomplete, slight traces of use, the surfaces in fine condition. A unique service of noble provenance.
The Red Dragon pattern or "Red Court Dragon" can be traced back to Augustus the Strong's delight in exotic porcelain and remained the exclusive preserve of the Saxon court until 1918. See U. Pietsch, A. Loesch, E. Ströber, Die Porzellansammlung zu Dresden – China, Japan, Meißen, München, 2006, p. 95.
