Eva Braun - a goatskin handbag
Eva Braun - a goatskin handbag
The body made completely of white goatskin, the metal frame covered in leather (cracked in places), the upper bar made of acrylic glass, the spring-loaded clasp in gilt, non-ferrous metal, engraved with the monogram "EB" in the typical four-leaf clover form, surmounted by a heart, the side bars with the loops for the missing strap also made of gilt, non-ferrous metal. Lined in black silk, the handbag has various inner pockets, some fastening with press studs, and a small, black silk purse. Dimensions approx. 25 x 28 cm. In fine condition. The handbag was considered a highly fashionable accessory at the time on account of the acrylic glass, which was only developed in the late 1930s. The painstakingly, yet rather unostentatious, engraved monogram was probably carried out privately by someone in Eva Braun's wide circle of friends. This is especially indicated by the addition of the small heart. This goatskin handbag is explicitly mentioned in Frankenfield's list as a present for the wife of the American dealer, "6 handbags (1 handbag, goatfur, free as a gift to Mrs [...])".
Provenance: Commanding Intelligence Officer of the District Greater Salzburg L. Frankenfield, who confiscated over 40 suitcases containing personal items belonging to Eva Braun, her sister Gretl Braun-Fegelein and Hermann Fegelein near Salzburg in May 1945.
