Löwen, die für ihre Stärke und ihr spirituelles Wesen verehrt wurden, galten als mythologische Wächter mit der göttlichen Kraft, böse Geister abzuwehren. Die Ursprünge der in Löwenform gegossenen Räuchergefäße sind schwer zu bestimmen, aber sie wurden in der frühen Ming-Dynastie (1368-1644) sehr populär. Im Gegensatz zu diesem Stück, das mit dem Deckel auf dem Rücken des Tieres gegossen ist, wurden Löwengefäße in der Regel mit einem abnehmbaren Kopf hergestellt und sitzend abgebildet. Das ausgehöhlte Innere wurde mit Holzkohle, Sandelholz oder Moschus gefüllt, und wenn Weihrauch angezündet wurde, trat Rauch aus dem Maul des Tieres aus, was den Eindruck erweckte, dass ein lebendes Wesen Rauch einatmet - Sehr leicht abgeplatzt, Holzdeckel ersetzt
