Further details
Considered as one of the great pioneers of modern art, Fernand Léger's work spans over the first half of the 20th century. Yet no one could have predicted such a successful destiny, given he was the son of a Norman cattle breeder. After studying architecture in Caen (during which he was not very studious but was a good draughtsman) he began working as an apprentice for an architect in Caen. At the age of 19, he moved to Paris to study with the painter Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts.
The year 1907, when the present work was painted, marked a decisive turning point for the young man. Like many others, Léger was strongly influenced by the retrospective devoted to the master Cézanne at the Salon d'Automne in 1907. This revelation triggered him to abandon the impressionism of his early works and to immerse himself in the language of the avant-garde. Gamins au soleil was one of Léger's last neo-impressionist works, before he turned to Cubism and moved to La Ruche. It was in this artistic effervescence of Montparnasse, that he befriended with Robert Delaunay, Marc Chagall, Blaise Cendrars and others.
Gamins au soleil, already hints to the highly structured nature of the artist's future works. To convey the dynamism of his time, he developed a style of painting based on contrasts of form and colour, the keystone of his aesthetic that would never be questioned by later developments.
