£ 8 000 – 12 000
FIRBANK, Ronald (1886-1926)
Autograph manuscript signed ('Ronald Firbank') of his novella Santal, Algiers-Tunis, [1921]
In violet ink. 35 pages, 298 x 190mm, a draft with a number of emendations and cancellations, mainly on rectos but with some insertions and revisions on facing verso; in a notebook, card covers. Provenance: 'Mrs Carew' (author's presentation inscription signed inside upper cover, 1921, with four pressed flowers); Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).

Autograph draft of this North African tale of a frustrated spiritual quest. Set in a fantastical version of the North African towns in which it was written, Santal describes the disillusionment and search for spiritual meaning of a young Arab boy, Cherif, ending characteristically on a note of resignation and failure.
