Estimate value

Tender is the Night. London: Chatto & Windus, 1934.
Authorial presentation copy of the first British edition of Scott Fitzgerald's poignant exploration of love, ambition, and fragility set against the decadent backdrop of the Jazz Age. The half-title is inscribed after the printed title 'with Florence – Says who? – Says F. Scott Fitzgerald.' Although there is no firm evidence, this is possibly inscribed to Florence Moran, a Hollywood starlet who became a significant figure in Fitzgerald's life during the 1920s. Their relationship was marked by admiration and inspiration; Fitzgerald wrote her into a short story titled 'Magnetism,' where she played a muse-like role for him. Fitzgerald then used aspects of her character in the present work's protagonist, Rosemary Hoyt. Bruccoli A15.2.a
Octavo (190x130mm). Half-title (front free endpaper and half-title with uneven browning along gutter, a couple of spots to p.400 and last two leaves of ads). Original blue cloth, spine with yellow-stamped lettering (light brown mottling to the top of the front cover and on the rear cover, browning to the lower half of spine); partial remnants of original dust-jacket (comprising upper half of front cover, middle portion of spine, small piece of rear cover and one flap); contained in a modern quarter morocco clamshell box, facsimile dust-jacket for first American edition provided. Provenance: authorial presentation inscription on half-title to: ?Florence Moran.
