FLEMING, Ian (1908-1964)

Casino Royale. London: Jonathan Cape, 1953.

First edition, first impression, first issue of the first James Bond novel. Written in early 1952 at Goldeneye, Fleming’s Jamaican hideaway, Casino Royale introduced the world to the character who would become fiction’s most famous spy. Fleming's inspiration for Casino Royale was a baccarat battle he played in Lisbon during the Second World War against several Portuguese men. According to one biographer, Fleming whispered at the table to his friend John Godfrey: 'Just suppose these fellows were German agents—what a coup it would be if we cleaned them out entirely!' (John Pearson, The Life of Ian Fleming, London, 1966, p. 131). Gilbert A1a (1.1).

Octavo. Publisher's black cloth lettered in red, red heart device on front cover; first issue dust-jacket decorated in red and yellow after the author's design (slight lean, faintest spotting to endpapers, dust-jacket with small repaired tear in one corner and very minor wear at extremities).
