Further Details

A PAIR OF BRONZE GROUPS REPRESENTING MARS AND VENUS WITH CUPID, CAST BY ROGER SCHABOL (ACTIVE CIRCA 1690-AFTER 1714)

Not only are the Quentin Mars and Venus the finest casts of these models known, but they are also one of only two small scale examples known in which the top surface of the base on which they stand is plain. An attribution to Sébastien Slodtz (1655-1726) has been proposed for Mars, based on a comparison of the bronze to the monumental statue of Hannibal by Slodtz executed in 1704 (Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. MR2093). This argument is reinforced by Slodtz's posthumous inventory, which lists three figures of Mars, two in terracotta and one in plaster, which have not survived. However, the creator of the model of Venus with Cupid remains unknown. The lost wax facture of the Quentin bronzes is highly idiosyncratic, indicating that Mars and Venus with Cupid were both cast by Roger Schabol a Brussels sculptor and foundryman active around 1690-1714. He was employed by Martins Desjardins to cast his equestrian models an example, signed and dated 1707, of Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria on Horseback, is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no. 2019.283.27. The exceptional Medusa-head decoration on Mars’ shield resembles that held by a Borghese Gladiator cast by Schabol now in a private collection.
