A splendid copy in neoclassical style red morocco of this famous richly decorated work that illustrates the history of the Vatican Basilica from its origins to Bernini's interventions.
Folio (437 x 315mm). Two titles, one in Italian and one in Latin with papal arms vignette, 80 plates, including an extra one by Paroli with the view of St. Peter's Square, 11 folding, the others full-page, all designed and signed by Carlo Fontana and engraved by Alessandro Specchi (some mistakes in the pagination as in the copy from the Zurich library, some browning and some tiny marginal wormholes sometimes repaired). Splendid late 18th-century red morocco in neoclassical-style richly decorated in gold on the covers and on the spine with floral motifs and sphinxes within a triple geometric frame, title on spine, gild edges (very light rubbing). Provenance: Tommaso de Vargas Machuca or Macciucca (1679-1775; bookplate).
