Ce tableau peut paraître douteux au premier regard, car inhabituel ! Ne vous y trompez pas, il est exceptionnel… La date de 1866 inscrite au dos corrobore le style évolutif de grande simplification des motifs. Cette dernière année à Crémieu pour vivre dès 1867 à Morestel prouve que le peintre a épuisé les coins de campagne environnante. Il a tellement observé et peint, sur place comme en atelier, ce site de Champrofond face à la bourgade de Crémieu qu’il n’en garde que les volumes et les contours. Il schématise à l’extrême la falaise rocheuse qui surplombe la cité crémolane, pour privilégier une trouée de lumière vive qui éclaire la verdure. Tout le reste est très simplifié, les ruines de St Hippolyte à gauche comme les frondaisons.
La modernité de la facture pour traiter le ciel noir zébré de larges touches de bleu et or-rose du nuage est une occasion, selon son expression, « de faire hurler le bourgeois » qui exige des paysages bien léchés.
Nous voyons ici un exemple de la peinture osée, courageuse et personnelle du peintre François-Auguste Ravier qui a 52 ans et continue à se griser de paysages et de ciels dauphinois….Christine Boyer-Thiollier.
