Der Schlüssel zur Interpretation, Entstehungsgeschichte und Darstellung des 1866/67 geschaffenen Gemäldes, ist die französische Inschrift in schwarzer Tinte auf der Rückseite des Original-Rahmens: "La jeune fille au piano peint par F. Bazille en 1866 acheté à J. R. Henry Cazalis, époux de Henriette Auriol le 13 mai 1900. Thérèse ayant servi de modèle pour le tableau, Thérèse cousine de Bazille et mère d'Henriette" ("Junge Frau am Klavier, gemalt von F. Bazille im Jahr 1866, erworben von J. R. Henry Cazalis, dem Ehemann von Henriette Auriol, am 13. Mai 1900. Thérèse stand Modell für das Gemälde; sie war Bazilles Cousine und Henriettes Mutter."). Das vorliegende Gemälde gehörte also ursprünglich Bazilles Cousine Thérèse des Hours (1850 - 1896), die hier Modell war und die er auch in mehreren weiteren Gemälden verewigte. Es ist zugleich Ausdruck für Bazilles zweite Passion als leidenschaftlicher Musikliebhaber, der Konzerte besuchte, Berlioz, Mendelssohn und Meyerbeer hörte sowie selbst Klavier spielte. Es überrascht daher nicht, dass auch diese vorliegende "Junge Frau beim Klavierspielen" höchstwahrscheinlich in seinem Atelier entstand, wie die Gemälde an der Wand über dem Klavier zeigen. Oben rechts ist die "Dorfstraße, Chailly" (1865) zu sehen, die sich heute im Musée Fabre in Montpellier befindet. Zur Kunst fand Bazille durch den bedeutenden Kunstsammler und Mäzen Alfred Bruyas in Montpellier, wo er Werke von Eugène Delacroix und Gustave Courbet sah. 1862 wandte sich Bazille ganz der Malerei zu und ging nach Paris. Mit Pierre-Auguste Renoir teilte er sich ein Atelier, arbeitete mit Claude Monet und Alfred Sisley zusammen, unterstützte die befreundeten Künstler finanziell. 1870 fiel Bazille - der begabte Vorreiter der Moderne und Frühimpressionist - im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg. Nach seinem frühen und tragischen Tod geriet Bazilles Oeuvre zunächst in Vergessenheit, da er zu Lebzeiten kein einziges Gemälde verkauft und nur wenige Arbeiten ausgestellt hatte. Erst posthum kam es zur Wiederentdeckung seiner Bedeutung. Heute befinden sich die Werke Bazilles u.a. im Musée d'Orsay in Paris, das 2016/17 auch die Retrospektive "Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870).
