Post lot text
Using objects or discarded pieces, most often doll heads, picked up here and there, the sculptures of Beninese artist Gerard Quenum often represent evocative and committed portraits with a message of protest. His works tell stories that evoke the shards and flaws of African history, and transport the viewer into ethnic groups, worlds or communities, often placing them in a proud and assumed African identity. The artist is marked by sacred rites which in turn permeate his works. After his first exhibition in 2009 in Paris, Gerard Quenum exhibited at the Zinsou Foundation in Cotonou, Benin, in 2013 and at the Museu Afro Brasil in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2010. His works have been included in renowned collections such as the British Museum in London and the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts in Stanford, USA.
