Gao Qifeng (1889-1933) - China, dated 1929 - Two Sailing Boats. Framed under glass. Ink on paper, inscription and signature by the artist: “Autumn Colors at the Lakeside. In the ninth month of the eighteenth year of the Republic (1929) painted for Dr. Shinaide (Schneider), Gao Qifeng”. Three seals of the artist: “Qifeng zhi xi”, “Lingnan Gao Weng”, "Mei yi yan nian". - Old North German private collection, in the family of the present owner since 1929, when the painting has been dedicated to a family member Gao Qifeng (1889-1933), with personal name Weng, was one of the founders of the Lingnan School of Chinese painting. He studied painting in Japan and was heavily influenced by the Japanese Nihonga painting which combined traditional Chinese painting with European naturalism and perspective. In this painting the two boats with their realistic depiction show this influence while the dark ink wash in the foreground comes from the Chinese tradition. The calligraphy of Gao Qifeng is also very individualistic and remarkable as is his nice seal carving Minor traces of age
