1899. Bronze, schwarz patiniert. H. 53,5 cm, L. 104 cm, T. 36 cm. Auf der Sockelfläche sign. Mattes, seitl. Gießerstempel GUSS V.A. BRANDSTETTER MÜNCHEN. Dargestellt ist der athletische männliche Akt eines gebeugten, nach vorne laufenden Mannes, der einen Ball verfolgt, den er gerade noch mit den Fingerspitzen erreicht. - Weitere Exemplare befinden sich in der Kunsthalle Bremen sowie den Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen - Sammlung Moderne Kunst in der Pinakothek der Moderne München. - Literatur: Katalog der Internationalen Kunst-Ausstellung des Vereins bildender Künstler Münchens (e.V.), "Secession" 1900, Nr. 362, Abb. 45 - Deutscher Bildhauer und Maler. Nach seiner Ausbildung an der Kunstgewerbeschule Nürnberg (1890-1894) trat Mattes 1894 an der Kgl. Akademie München in die Bildhauerklasse von Wilhelm von Rümann ein. Nach anfänglicher Tätigkeit für die kunstkeramischen Werkstätten der Porzellanfabrik Hutschenreuther und Studienreisen nach Italien, Frankreich und die Schweiz gründete er 1907 seine eigene Werkstatt in München. Wie sein berühmter Zeitgenosse Franz von Stuck war Mattes ein Vertreter des Symbolismus, ehe er sich der Kirchenplastik zuwandte. Er stattete zahlreiche Münchner Kirchen mit seinen Arbeiten aus, sein umfangreiches Oeuvre umfasst außerdem Brunnen, Reliefs, Kriegerdenkmale, Büsten und Aktdarstellungen.
