Um 1900. Bronze, Spuren schwarzer Lackpatina. H. 61 cm. Auf der Plinthe sign.: G. MATTES, am Plinthenrand Gießerstempel: GUSS H KLEMENT MÜNCHEN. Zustand Kl. Reparaturstellen. Die große Bronzefigur ist fein und detailreich ausgearbeitet und zeigt Orpheus, den Sänger und Dichter der griechischen Mythologie, mit seinem typischen Attribut, der Harfe. - Deutscher Bildhauer und Maler. Nach seiner Ausbildung an der Kunstgewerbeschule Nürnberg (1890-1894) trat Mattes 1894 an der Kgl. Akademie München in die Bildhauerklasse von Wilhelm von Rümann ein. Nach anfänglicher Tätigkeit für die kunstkeramischen Werkstätten der Porzellanfabrik Hutschenreuther und Studienreisen nach Italien, Frankreich und die Schweiz gründete er 1907 seine eigene Werkstatt in München. Wie sein berühmter Zeitgenosse Franz von Stuck war Mattes ein Vertreter des Symbolismus, ehe er sich der Kirchenplastik zuwandte. Er stattete zahlreiche Münchner Kirchen mit seinen Arbeiten aus, sein umfangreiches Oeuvre umfasst außerdem Brunnen, Reliefs, Kriegerdenkmale, Büsten und Aktdarstellungen.
