Min. beschädigt Rahmen min. beschädigt Das Gemälde war ursprünglich Teil eines wohl sechsteiligen Zyklus' mit Szenen aus der Kindheit Christi, die noch Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts in der Stiftskirche Notre-Dame in Huy, Belgien, aufgeführt werden (Roy, S. 224, Werkverzeichnis-Nrn. P. 37-42). Diese Gemälde, darunter das vorliegende, wurden in der Auktion Old Master Paintings bei Sotheby's, London, am 4. April 1984 noch zusammen angeboten (Katalog-Nrn. 73-78). Nach einem vielversprechenden Start seiner malerischen Karriere musste Gérard de Lairesse seine Geburtsstadt Lüttich aufgrund einer Liebesaffäre verlassen und siedelte sich 1665, nach Aufenthalten in Maastricht und Utrecht, schließlich in Amsterdam an. Bald eröffnete er dort eine eigene Werkstatt, mit der er schnell erfolgreich wurde - u. a. war er für Willem III. von Oranien-Nassau und dessen Kreis tätig. 1689/90 erblindete der Künstler und seine künstlerische Tätigkeit fand ein jähes Ende. Er hielt nun Vorlesungen und verfasste Schriften zur Zeichenkunst (Grondlegginge der Teekenkunst, 1701) und Malerei (Het groot Schilderboek, 1707), die in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt wurden und im 18. The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
