Neben Ernst Barlach, Wilhelm Lehmbruck und Georg Kolbe gehört Gerhard Marcks zu den großen figürlichen Bildhauern des 20. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland. Der Autodidakt gestaltete ca. 1.100 Plastiken, meist Tierskulpturenund menschliche Figuren, darunter bekannte Werke wie die Bremer Stadtmusikanten, die Hiob-Plastik in Nürnberg und die spielenden Hengste im Park am warmen Damm in Wiesbaden. Zudem gestaltete Gerhard Marcks die Rückseite der Siegermedaille der Olympischen Sommerspiele in München. Auf seiner ersten Griechenlandreise 1928 entdeckte Gerhard Marcks die archaische griechische Plastik (6.- 7. Jh. v. Chr.) für sich, was seine weitere künstlerische Entwicklung nachhaltig prägte. Nie sind seine Skulpturen heroisch, vielmehr drücken sie menschliche Grundstimmungen aus. Griechenland hat Gerhard Marcks nicht losgelassen. Während er die Sommer in Gegenwart seiner Familie in Köln und Hain, einer kleinen Ortschaft nahe dem alten Benediktinerkloster Maria Laach verbrachte, zog es ihn im Frühjahr und Herbst auf die griechische Insel Ägina, wo er 1964 ein Sommerhaus erworben hatte. In der Eifel zeichnete er Naturlandschaften mit farbiger Kreide, in Köln schuf er wie eh und je Plastik, auf Ägina wurde gezeichnet und plastisch gearbeitet. Die Produktivität des Künstlers hat im Alter nicht abgenommen, so sind in seinem letzten Lebensjahrzehnt noch weit über 200 Plastiken erschienen. So ist Gerhard Marcks auch im Spätwerk ein Meister der Aktfigur, des Porträts und der Tierplastik geblieben. Heute bewahrt die Gerhard-Marcks-Stiftung große Teile des künstlerischen Werks von Gerhard Marcks: ca. 430 Plastiken, 12.000 Handzeichnungen und über 1.000 Blatt Druckgrafik. Sie werden dem Publikum in wechselnden Ausstellungen im Bremer Gerhard-Marcks-Haus zugänglich gemacht (www.marcks.de).
