In the 1780s, Giovanni Volpato joined forces with Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros to create picturesque Italian views for tourists. While this watercolour is not directly related to a known prototype by Ducros, it is nevertheless related to the 1780 publication of a collection of Views of Rome and its Surroundings including large watercolour views over etched outlines (Images of the Grand Tour. Louis Ducros 1748-1810, exhib. cat., London, Kenwood, Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery, and Lausanne, Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, 1985-1986, p. 20).
