Further details

GIUSEPPE CADÈS, STUDY FOR THE MIRACLE OF SAINT JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO (RECTO-VERSO), BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BLACK INK, GREY WASH, WATERMARK

This study is preparatory for a painting which since 1778-1779 has adorned the top of the altar in one of the chapels of the Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli in Rome, adjacent to the convent dedicated to Saint Joseph of Copertino (Caracciolo, op. cit., no. 33A, ill.). Three other pen and ink studies of the overall composition are known by Cadès: at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and of unknown location (ibid., nos. 33E, 33F, 33C). There is also a modello on canvas in the Convent of the Holy Apostles (ibid., no. 33B, ill.).
The scene depicts Saint Joseph of Copertino, celebrating mass in 1651, mysteriously rising into the air in front of John Frederick of Saxony-Brunswick-Lüneburg, a Lutheran who converted to Catholicism after this miracle.
