Post lot text GIUSEPPE GALLI BIBIENA, AN ARCHITECTURAL THEATER DESIGN, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BLACK AND BROWN INK, GREY AND BROWN WASH, INSCRIBEDThanks to the inscription in the lower part of the sheet, this drawing was rightly identified by D. Lenzi (op. cit., p. 55) as a study for the Ipermestra’s scenography Scene 7, Act I, of which it records a part of the didascaly, allowing to complete it with the following: ‘… ruine d’antiche fabbriche’. P. Metastasio’s booklet was performed in Vienna in 1744, and the scenography commissioned to Giuseppe Galli Bibiena while the music to German and Italian composers Johann Adolf Hasse et Luca Antonio Predieri.Executed in a more elegant and delicate style than his works dated to 1720-1730s, this study compares to further drawings dating from 1740s, when at the Accademia Clementina, including those preparatory for the Spanish Calvary in 1744 or other capricci from that period (Morgan Library, New York, inv. 1982.75:125).
