Provenienz: Privatbesitz, Baden-Württemberg. - Gottfried Graf gehörte seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg bis in die Mitte der 1920er Jahren zu den Wegbereitern der modernen Kunst im südwestdeutschen Raum.Graf wurde in Mengen, im heutigen Landkreis Sigmaringen, geboren und nach der Schule Angestellter der Königlich Württembergischen Post. Schnell stellte er fest, dass dieser Beruf nicht für ihn geeignet war und wandte sich der Kunst zu. Zwischen 1904 und 1908 absolvierte er ein Studium an der Königlich württembergischen Akademie und der Kunstgewerbeschule Stuttgart, das er mit Staatsexamen als Zeichenlehrer abschloss. Nach einer längeren Studienreise nach Italien nahm Graf 1909 sein Studium als Schüler von Christian Landenberger, Adolf Hölzel und Heinrich Altherr an der Akademie in Stuttgart wieder auf. 1913 reiste er nach Südfrankreich, wo er Jaques Villon und Albert Gleizes begegnete. Diese Reise führte dazu, dass sich Graf in den folgenden Jahren intensiv mit dem Kubismus auseinandersetzte. Nach dem Krieg gründete Gottfried Graf, zusammen mit Willi Baumeister, Edmund Daniel Kinzinger, Albert Müller, Oskar Schlemmer und Hans Spiegel, die "Üechtgruppe". Im gleichen Jahr veranstaltete die Gruppe die "I. Herbstschau Neuer Kunst" unter Teilnahme der Berliner Künstlervereinigung "Sturm" und bedeutender französischer und italienischer Künstler in Stuttgart. Zum 50. Geburtstag des Künstlers richtete Julius Baum 1931 eine große Gesamtausstellung im Ulmer Museum ein. Sie wurde in weiten Teil vom Kunstverein Stuttgart übernommen. Es folgt eine Ausstellungsbeteiligung in der Wiener Sezession. Während der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur wurden viele der Werke von Gottfried Graf als 'entartet' diffamiert und aus den Museen entfernt. Schließlich musste er auch das Lehramt aufgeben. 1938 starb Gottfried Graf in Stuttgart.In dem monumentalen Gemälde "Urteil des Paris" stellt Graf den Moment dar, in dem Paris sein Urteil gefällt hat und Aphrodite den Apfel der Eris hinhält. Hera und Athene, die zwei nicht berücksichtigten Göttinnen wenden sich bereits von der Szene ab. Sie scheinen schon ihr gemeinsames Vorgehen gegen das Paar zu besprechen. Hermes, der die Göttinnen zu Paris begleitet hat, nimmt die Rolle eines wenig interessierten Statisten ein. Geprägt wird die Bildkomposition durch die Darstellungen der Göttin Hera und des Königssohns Paris. Die massive, leicht bedeckte Hera triumphiert. Ihr rechtes Bein ist leicht angewinkelt und leitet zu Paris über. Die Farbigkeit und die Größe der zwei Akte lassen sie als eine Einheit erscheinen, die sich von den übrigen Personen und dem Hintergrund abhebt. Im Vordergrund ist die Gegenwart, die das Paar noch genießen kann, im Hintergrund deutet sich jedoch bereits an, was die Zukunft bringen wird.
