Excellent state of conservation of this work, one of the most famous by Grandville, a 19th-century French illustrator, designer and caricaturist. The texts are by Honoré de Balzac, Benjamin Franklin, Jules Janin, Alfred de Musset, Charles Nodier, George Sand, P.-J. Stahl et al., and the illustrations are distinguished by their peculiar ability to reproduce human traits in animal faces.
8vo (262 x 170mm). Half-title, frontispiece and 95 plates in first volume; half-title, frontispiece and 104 plates in the second, numerous vignettes (occasional light spotting). Blue leather backed in morocco, gilt titles and decorations on spine and corners, marbled endpapers and edges, in good conditions.
