Wolfgang Stantler, Klingenschmied in München. Aus der bekannten, aus Passau stammenden Schwertfegerfamilie Stantler, die bereits im 15. Jhdt. nachweisbar ist und dort die berühmten Passauer Wolfsklingen fertigte.
A large two-handed sword by the Stantler workshop in Munich, circa 1600
Robust blade of lenticular section, Wolfgang Stantler's smith mark struck on both sides at the shoulder. Old leather-covered ricasso with two robust side lugs. Slender quillons with scrolled details and coiled terminals bent towards the blade. Large side-rings filled with fleur-de-lys ornaments on both sides. Finely punched décor all over. Leather-covered grip with central moulding and cord wrap, replaced tassel. Biconical pommel with six flutes and fine incisions. Length 180 cm.
Wolfgang Stantler, Munich bladesmith. From the noted Passau-based swordmaker family Stantler, which can be traced back to the 15th century and is known for crafting the famous Passau wolf mark blades.
