Further details

HANS JAKOB OERI, PORTRAIT OF THE TWIN BROTHERS LUDWIG SCHULTHESS-KAUFMANN AND EMIL SCHULTHESS-SCHULTHESS WITH A HERBARIUM, BLACK CHALK AND CHARCOAL

Born in Zurich, the brothers depicted here are depicted in their daily lives, engaged in two activities that are central to the family’s interests. The flowers in the foreground will be dried between the pages of a book held by one of the brothers, probably Emil. The reference to botany refers to the father, Leonhard Schulthess-Nüscheler (1775-1841), an amateur biologist and painter of flowers. The art is evoked by the instruments brought by Ludwig, which indicate the next stage of their work, when the plants are drawn after drying. The twins’ love of drawing carried them into adulthood, and they became amateur artists, focusing on the depiction of historical monuments (Von Fellenberg, op. cit.).
Oeri executed the present drawing on his final return to Switzerland around 1819, after completing part of his training in Paris, where he joined Jacques-Louis David’s studio and attended the École des Beaux-Arts, and after a stay in Russia. Settling in Zurich, the artist produced a number of drawn portraits of the Swiss upper middle class, including several of children. A child’s portrait in black chalk is in the Kunstmuseum Winterthur (V. von Fellenberg, Hans Jakob Oeri (1782-1868). Ein Schweizer Künstler in Paris, Moskau, Zürich, exhib. cat., Kunsthaus Zürich, 2016, no. 30, ill.). Other portraits of Zurich society are held in the Kunsthaus Zürich (inv. 1945/9, 1945/11, 1945/12).
